Join us on Saturday, October 19th, for a beautiful morning hike along the Betty B. Dearing Trail in Fryman Canyon Park! This 5.1-mile out-and-back trail winds through the eastern Santa Monica Mountains, offering panoramic views of the San Fernando Valley and glimpses of downtown Los Angeles. With a mix of inclines, shady stretches, and rewarding viewpoints, it’s a perfect way to enjoy nature without straying far from campus.
We’ll be joined on the trail by Patrick Stein from the UCLA History Department, whose research examines how novel international trade networks shaped local communities in the “Eastern Sea” circuit of Fujian, Taiwan, and the Philippines between the 16th and 19th centuries. As a historian of China and maritime exchange, Professor Stein offers a fascinating perspective on global connections, cultural exchange, and how people’s lives were transformed by trade.
